Can festivals help children become better human beings?

Humans are a social animal and our behavior is molded by the environment in which we live. Festivals are an important part of that environment. Generally, these are very important events celebrated by a community with perceived common identity. Each festival celebration consists of multiple rituals & activities. A new born baby is like a blank slate, he/she could learn a lot from being part of various activities performed during festivals. Let’s look at some of the common festive tasks and their impact on kids:-

Cleaning

As they say, cleanliness is next to godliness. Prerequisites of many of our festivals include cleaning of the house. Kids should be encouraged to participate in house cleaning as well as go a step further and contribute in cleaning nearby surroundings, their school, playground, etc. This shall help them learn the importance of personal as well as environmental care, hygiene and cleanliness.

Decorating

Sight of colorful lights, candles, Rangoli, earthenware, decorative art pieces, etc. instantly helps us recognize the festive atmosphere. Many of these are handmade. If kids take part in decoration activities during festivals they will develop art, craft and sensory skills.

Shopping

Excitement of buying something new like clothes, home utility/decor articles, etc. is at its peak during festivals. Shopping activity can teach kids multiple important skills like product selection, financial/fund management, negotiation, deal making, etc.

Gifting

Exchanging sweets and gifts make festivals memorable and it shouldn’t be limited to family, friends and neighbors. During festivals adults shall take along kids and distribute happiness in the form of gifts to underprivileged living beings. It will help kids imbibe the qualities of compassion, sharing and ‘joy of giving’.

Bonding

Festive celebrations would be incomplete without a good laugh together! As much as possible, meet (face to face, virtually) all the people you care for, with your kids. This will educate kids about the great power of networking, bonding and togetherness.
